Small Talk Matters
I loved that the Wall Street Journal is recognizing soft skills as critical to a workforce moving away from the tasks technology does for us. We’re getting back to relationships, human connection and conversation as valued skills. When I worked for Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii (best mission ever!) we focused a good bit of our programming on the simple soft skills of working within teams and to resolve conflict with conversation.
Being able to shake someone’s hand and connect with small talk is a start. Our effectiveness in conversation is critical to our success both at home and at work and the article hints at us “forgetting” how to do something as basic as small talk. Welcome to 2018! Want to improve your skills in conversation? You should, navigating conversations and inter-personal communication will provide greater happiness – and who doesn’t want that? Take a look at my my talk on communication and rapport dives deeper into using those soft skills everyday and when the going gets rough…you better be able to read other people like a book.
